My Start Menu

Do NOT try this on WinME or Win2k

>Wow! Okay I'm impressed. The obvious question is, "How do you do it?"
CHANGING ICONS
For how to do the icon changing (except for the "Start Button" icon) see my "Changing Icons" page.
Some but not all of the icons can be changed using MicroAngelo98. The Start Button icon was changed
using MicroAngelo98 editing a working copy of C:\Windows\System\user.exe. See explorer example below....
EDITING THE START MENU
You need a hex editor like Ultraedit.exe to edit Explorer.exe but make a backup of Explorer first.
Edit a working copy of Explorer.exe, exit to Dos & copy the edited file to Explorer.exe & restart Windows.

Make a backup copy first, ie: copy explorer.exe *.bak
Make a working copy 2nd, ie: copy explorer.exe *.wrk
Edit working copy. Goto dos mode & copy explorer.wrk *.exe.

In Windows98 Explorer.exe DO NOT EDIT THE LINE in the Ascii section '&.P.r.o.g.r.a.m.s.'.
In order to change 'Settings' go to line number 00027efOh,
to change 'Find' go to line number 000280f0h,
to change 'Help' go to line number 00028120h,
to change 'Shut Down' go to line number 000281e0h,
to change 'Start' on the Start Button go to line number 00028d60h
and use the same number of characters for replacement.
In Windows95 the line numbers are different, just becareful & do a search with Ultraedit.
CHANGING PROGRAMS FOLDER
All you need is SysPolEd.exe that's on your Windows CD or available from Microsoft web site.
Run the Registry editor part of it & create a custom location for 'Programs'
from '[drive]:\windows\start menu\programs' to '[drive]:\windows\start menu' and restart windows.
Now you can move all the sub-folders of
[drive]:\windows\start menu\programs to [drive]:\windows\start menu.
CHANGING THE CONTROL PANEL FOLDER
In any case you can create 'Tools' folder & create shortcuts by dragging all the Control Panel applets
in the new 'System' Folder. Once you've done that then add shortcuts that should've been there all
the time like Regedit.lnk

You can do any or all of the above. If you do all of it then you'll end up with a 'Start Menu' like this one.
